Race Upgrades Volume 2 - Protoss

The previous article was about Zerg upgrades. Well, protoss is a very different race with different tech and upgrades. Let's see, what do we have:

Forge - enables the use of Cannons

You are going to get this building for the most basic upgrades for your protoss army, and for some nice cannons aswell. Here you have 3 options to research:

Ground weapon

Upgrade Ground Weapons Level 1 - Upgrades the damage dealt by Protoss ground units to level 1. Costs 100 mineral and 100 gas.
Upgrade Ground Weapons Level 2 - Upgrades the damage dealt by Protoss ground units to level 2. Costs 175 mineral and 175 gas.
Upgrade Ground Weapons Level 3 - Upgrades the damage dealt by Protoss ground units to level 3. Costs 250 mineral and 250 gas

Ground armor

Upgrade Ground Armor Level 1 - Upgrades the armor of Protoss ground units to level 1. Costs 100 mineral and 100 gas.
Upgrade Ground Armor Level 2 - Upgrades the armor of Protoss ground units to level 2. Costs 175 mineral and 175 gas.
Upgrade Ground Armor Level 3 - Upgrades the armor of Protoss ground units to level 3. Costs 250 mineral and 250 gas.

Shields

Upgrade Shields Level 1 - Upgrades the shields of all Protoss units and buildings. Costs 200 mineral and 200 gas.
Upgrade Shields Level 2 - Upgrades the damage dealt by Protoss air units to level 2. Costs 300 mineral and 300 gas.
Upgrade Shields Level 3 - Upgrades the damage dealt by Protoss air units to level 3. Costs 400 mineral and 400 gas.

If you are thinking about the cost/effectiveness of these upgrades, think about those this way: all your ground units benefit from researching an upgrade. And when i say all, it's for the little Zealot as well as for the mighty Colossi.

Full list of affected ground units:

  • Archon
  • Colossus
  • Dark Templar
  • High Templar
  • Immortal
  • Probe
  • Sentry
  • Stalker
  • Zealot

So when you upgrade your army, that matters for nearly all units in the protoss race. Also, the Shield upgrade applies for all units and buildings aswell.

We've got the basic upgrades, look at the tech buildings now!

Cybernetics Core - Enables the training of Sentry and Stalker in Gateway.

Upgrade Air Armor Level 1 - Upgrades the armor of Protoss air units to level 1. Costs 150 mineral and 150 gas.
Upgrade Air Armor Level 2 - Upgrades the armor of Protoss air units to level 2. Costs 225 mineral and 225 gas.
Upgrade Air Armor Level 3 - Upgrades the armor of Protoss air units to level 3. Costs 300 mineral and 300gas.

Air armor pretty much speaks for itself. Units affected by these upgrades can be found below.

Upgrade Air Weapons Level 1 -Upgrades the damage dealt by Protoss air units to level 1. Costs 100 mineral and 100 gas.
Upgrade Air Weapons Level 2 -Upgrades the damage dealt by Protoss air units to level 2. Costs 175 mineral and 175 gas.
Upgrade Air Weapons Level 3 - Upgrades the damage dealt by Protoss air units to level 3. Costs 250 mineral and 250 gas.

Air Weapons and Armor affect these units:

  • Carrier
  • Interceptor
  • Mothership
  • Phoenix
  • Void Ray

Affected by armor only (cannot attack):

  • Warp Prism
  • Observer

So if you want to get a massive air army, you need these upgrades. The most common use of air weapon lvl1 is for a Void Ray rush, the +1 upgrade really matters for those ships. By the way, protoss is not the best in terms of air warfare, so think twice before you research these upgrades.

Research Hallucination - Creates hallucinations that cannot deal damage and die more easily. Hallucinations last 60 seconds. Enemy detectors reveal hallucinations. Hallucination is a skill for the sentry unit. Most commonly used to create a phoenix halu and scout around with it (it's the fastest air unit in the game). Can be used to create a distraction or cover your army with mass air (so the enemy cannot Microyour costy units). Costs 100 mineral and 100 gas.

Research Warp Gate - Upgrades this Gateway to a Warp Gate, allowing it to warp-in ground units to any location powered by a Pylon or Warp Prism. An upgrade you need to get as soon as possible. You can transfrom your Gateways to Warp Gates and warp in units to any powered are (by a Pylon or a Warp Prism). It's spawning units a lot faster and recharges quicker then the original gateway. Costs 50 mineral and 50 gas.

Twilight Council - A bridge for templar units

Research Blink - Teleports the Stalker to a nearby target location. This ability can only be used every 10 seconds. A nice ability for your Stalkers. They can blink over obstacles, blink up ramps, etc. Mostly used for chasing units and escaping. If your micro play is good, you can blink wounded units from the front line allowing them to regenerate their shields. Costs 150 mineral and 150 gas.
Research Charge - Allows Zealots to intecept nearby enemies. Also increases the movement speed of Zealots. This ability can only be used once every 10 seconds. If you use a Zealot heavy army, this upgrade is for you. Your zealots will be able to charge on enemies, and eat them up in seconds. Costs 200 mineral and 200 gas.

Templar Archives - House of the mighty High Templar.

Research Khaydarin Amulet - Increases the starting energy of High Templar by 25. In case your opponent goes for massing one or two kinds of units (zerg hydra + roach, terran marauder+ marine), or you are facing a big sum of units, you will need the energy for Psionic Storm as soon as you warp in your High Templars. This is a nice, handy, must-have upgrade, if you are facing a situation like that. Costs 150 mineral and 150 gas.
Research Psionic Storm - Creates a storm of psionic energy that lasts 4 seconds, causing up to 80 damage to all units in the target area. Ability can only be used once every 3 seconds. Costs 75 energy. If you want to use high templars, you must upgrade this right after the Khaydarin Amulet. Warp a templar and storm in the face right after! Costs 200 mineral and 200 gas.

Robotics Bay - The building for Colossus.

Research Extended Thermal Lances - Increases the range of the Colossus weapon. Your Colossus becomes the ultimate killer with this range upgrade. This is a must have if you go for Colossi. See the picture below for the upgraded range. Costs 200 mineral and 200 gas.
Research Gravitic Boosters - Increases the movement speed of Observers. It really adds a decent speed to your Observers. Nice to have upgrade. Costs 100 mineral and 100 gas.
Research Gravitic Drive - Increases the movement speed of Warp Prisms. If you want to make a drop and then escape quickly, this upgrade is for you. Costs 100 mineral and 100 gas.

Colossus range upgrade:

Fleet Beacon - If you want to get protoss air superiority. Enables mothership to be trained.

Research Flux Vanes - Increases the speed and acceleration of the Void Ray. Well, a nice upgrade, but i think it's a little bit late in tech. You can get it if you have a decent army of void rays and you want to harass enemy bases easily. Makes your Void Ray flying like a shiny super dart. Costs 150 mineral and 150 gas.
Research Graviton Catapult - Makes the Carrier launch interceptors more quickly. It generally upgrades the attack speed of your Carrier. Good to have for 150 mineral and 150 gas.

So these are all the upgrades you can get for your protoss army. If you have something to ask or you have something to say, feel free to comment below! The last article is going to be about Terran upgrades. Don't forget to check back!
