Anyway, I'd like to discuss absurd tactics in mid to late game This is for those players that want to spice up zerg play, or have APM to waste : P Now, I'm not the best player in explaining strategies or tactics so bear with me here. I've gotten the idea from the Overseer threads, and the queen play in Day9s recent daily.
Alright, lets take a look at the units we're going to be focusing on in these little tactics to give us an edge versus Terran, Protoss, or even another zerg!
Important Units:
Overseer
Queen
Infestor
Other:
All other zerg units, they all have a use when combined with overseers (or overseers are good with all other tech units...)
Quick Tactics:
Overseer Harass using infested terrans:
Followup: When multiple overseers are used, contaminate his CCs, and keep moving back to contaminate when it wears off after a really successful harass. He won't be making any SCVs, and will fall behind even more economically.
Overlord+Queen Creeping:
Overlord and queen inside it to spew creep and deny expansions/creep the opponents base with creep tumors. May make them think theres a nydus worm popping up to pull back their army!
Followup: Put drones inside the overlord as well, and make spine crawlers in your opponents base after creep tumoring. Will deal significant damage, or at least keep them contained! The queen can be microed from the overlord, and transfuse can be used on the spine crawlers.
Queen transfusion Micro:
Using an extra queen in the back to transfuse an infestor if it starts to get focused down, allowing it that extra second to get off a fungal growth, or neural parasite that collossi and allow it to live!
Abusing Overseer No Supply Cost:
Morph a bunch of overseers if maxed out. If you a have a 200/200 army against a meching terran, or a collossus heavy army and you're primarily ground, or can't go corrupters because of heavy anti air, build a bunch of overseers. Overseers don't cost any supply, and the extra minerals can be put to good use. If you have 10 overseers, thats 20 extra infested terrans to deal damage, and maybe let you win that hard fought battle you would have otherwise lost. Also, Having 30 overseers constantly moving from base to base might just make it hard for the enemy to move out at all, 60 infested terrans can focus down a command center or any other building relatively quickly.
Overlord+Infestor+Overseer Harass:
Unload the infestor, fungal growth the entire mineral line, drop 1 or 2 infested terrans, retreat. Poof, 20-30 miners gone in the blink of an eye! Can happen so fast that static defenses aren't that effective, and armies cannot retreat.
Overlord+Infestor+Overseer Sniping Buildings:
Sniping production buildings with frenzied infested terrans is also pretty effective with no cost other than overseers, energy, and the infestor. have 4-5 overseers drop infested terrans right at crucial production buildings, unload an infestor from an overlord, frenzy all the infested terrans, and escape with overlord and overseers.
Mixing Queens In With Roach/Ultra:
Simply adding queens into a roach heavy army will make it more effective against high DPS ranged units. Constantly transfusing the roaches and allowing them to survive almost three times as long.
Same for Ultralisks, having 2-3 Ultras and 6-8 Queens is almost imbalanced. The queens can constantly transfuse the Ultras, allowing them to deal much needed damage. Combine this with an overlord dropping an infestor to frenzy and or fungal growth and then picking it back up again to retreat, you'll have yourself an invincible, pissed off ultra tearing apart your enemy without them being able to do a damn thing!
Ideas based upon your replies!
Baneling Mines:
Burrow banelings, then right click unburrow, it sets the ability as autocast. When enemy units walk over it, it pops up. Similar to spider mines in Sc1, but if they're focused down, they still explode. If you REALLY want to get fancy, on island expos take an overlord and drop 4-5 banelings into the spaces between where the mineral line is and where a CC would land, before he takes the expansion. You can wait till it is saturated, and BOOM, detonate the mines. The player wouldn't have a CLUE what happened to all of his workers! Even if he doesn't take the expansion, you KNOW he didn't take the expansion, and you can know exactly how many bases he has safely.
Baneling Drops
Drop banelings down on the opponents mineral line and BOOM! 20 Workers gone! Combine this with other in-base strategies. (Nydus Worm in the back, fake doom drop while attacking another expo, etc.) you can even use my favorite unit the Overseer to poop a couple of infested terrans at the ramp, so that if workers manage to get away then ITs can snipe some of them as they fly right towards them.
Using ITs to pick away at missle turrets
If there are missle turrets close to cliffs, you can throw infested terrans down on the cliff, and pick away at the missle turrets. The overseer has alot of versatility in being a VERY annoying unit!
Infested Terran Bombs.
Using infested terrans to poop on a tank, to make another tank splash it. You can weaken defenses relatively safely this way.
If you have an ideas for ridiculous strategies that just might be game changing for zerg, reply and I will keep updating the thread! Thank you : D
Using queens as a substitute or backup for roaches.
Mixing in queens with your roach/hydra composition could make it insanely more powerful. Its like having 4 roaches to tank for every queen! (since a full mana queen can cast transfuse which heals 125 HP 4 times) Combine this with armor and your units will greatly outlast their life expactancy!
Tips for this strategy:
Use overlords to drop the queens in front of your hydras, or to get better positioning is beneficial becuase of the queens slow speed, and the fact that they can spew creep to give your army a speed boost.
Your queens can also spread tumors in the area before the battle (You might even be able to go behind the enemies army if they're not really mobile and set up creep tumors there as well, meaning that they're surrounded with creep.)
And...if they're surrounded with creep you can use overlords to drop drones and block off their retreat path with spine crawlers, or put them up on strategic locations such as ledges in the middle of the map, like the spots on some maps where siege tanks can fit. a couple spine crawlers can fit there as well (The map name slips my mind right now, its right next to the xelnaga towers)
I'm hoping that Zerg players use these WEIRD, yet promising strategies to suprise, confuse, and outwit enemies, abuse Zerg mobility and harassment to the max, and open up new playstyles.
Edit: Just noticing how much more powerful auto turret is:
Actually, comparing the Overseer And The Raven....The overseer gets shat on heavily!
Instant Build Time. (compared to 5)
3x the HP.
9x The duration (With an Upgrade 12x)
Slightly better range and attack.
1 More armor (infested terran has none)
If they buffed Infested Terran...That would be great. (possible since noone is using them, really.)
